Satisfied employees contribute significantly to the success of a company—that is common knowledge. However, it is not only the quality of work results, motivation, and performance that are influenced by job satisfaction, but also external feedback. That is why, especially in times of demographic change and the resulting shortage of skilled workers, it is essential for companies to value their employees and promote and increase their job satisfaction in order to improve their own image at the same time.
In addition to factors such as development opportunities, work-life balance, a good management culture, and a pleasant working environment, employee satisfaction always depends on financial and material incentives. In addition to salary, tax-free benefits in kind offer an ideal opportunity to show employees appreciation for their commitment or good performance.
Benefits in kind can be both goods and services provided by the Employer that are tax-free for employees within specified limits. While salaries and additional cash payments to employees are generally taxable, there is an exemption limit for benefits in kind. This means that only when the value of the benefit in kind exceeds the exemption limit does the entire amount become taxable.
Depending on the purpose, there are various options for employers to provide employees with tax-free benefits in kind:
Exemption limit for monthly benefits in kind.
Non-cash benefits up to a value of €50 are tax-free once a month. This means that employers can issue shopping and fuel vouchers worth up to €50 per month, for example, without employees having to pay tax or social security contributions on them. Cash payments, even with a clear note that they are to be used exclusively for fuel, are not permitted and must be taxed as cash benefits.
If several benefits in kind are combined, the total value may also not exceed €50. It does not matter when exactly the employee redeems the benefit in kind. Employees can collect several shopping vouchers to make a larger purchase. It is not possible to carry over unused amounts. If an employer has not provided any benefits in kind in January and February, the €100 cannot be used in March in addition to the €50 exemption limit.
Exemption limit for occasion-related gifts.
Companies can also give their employees tax-free gifts in kind for personal occasions such as birthdays, weddings, the birth of a child, anniversaries, etc. Gifts and tokens of appreciation up to a value of €60 are tax-free for this purpose. The exemption limit is linked to the occasion, not the period, which means that if there are several occasions per month, several gifts of €60 each can be given to employees. However, the same rule applies here: no cash may be given as a gift.
All gifts in kind can be claimed by the employer as business expenses and should therefore be documented as accurately as possible so that they can be verified to the tax office. Complete documentation confirms that exemption limits are being adhered to or that the inflow of multiple benefits in kind that would exceed the amount does not occur in a single month. The specific occasion for which gifts and tokens of appreciation of up to €60 were used should also be recorded. This is because only if this is actually the case can the additional amount remain tax-free.
Five tax-free extras.
